Almost 2 months since leaving uni. I haven't started any new work yet, instead focusing on having a sort out and chilling. I have been out and about taking photographs though and did have a few hours in the garden where I put a piece of canvas on the grass (size approx 4 x 3 ft) and secured with tent pegs in the corner.
I then just let myself make a mess; using watercolour, acrylics, pen, charcoal, a multi coloured crayon and a tin can. I just spent an hour playing..... I loved just crawling around the fabric, using my hands/feet to make marks, using text to unload, The end result is a crazy canvas shown below. Inspired by Rose Wylie and her use of large canvases. I saw her winning piece at at Walker Art Gallery in 2014 and I loved the scale of her work. I have also added some new photographs to the gallery. If you are interested in having a print of any of the photographs, please contact me. There are a couple of textile exhibitions I hope to get to see in the next month or so..... Macclesfield Silk Museum ('Making Space') is one and the other in Stafford ('A Group Gathering').

So, last night I made my first piece of work for about a month... made a small gift for a friend's 27th birthday. It's gotten me back into my studio space.... which I can just about squeeze into with all the stuff I brought back from Uni.
So the clear out has started. I have put some items up for sale on my Facebook page because they're too good to throw away (https://www.facebook.com/traceyelizharris/). Tomorrow and for the next week, I will be going through the whole room to organise it more. It's been a working space for about 18 months so I now have more of an idea of how I want to work in there and how it could work better. I'm looking at a few submissions for galleries. Surface Gallery in Nottingham and one in Liverpool just for girls.... Have been totally blown away today with an artist who makes very unique and unusual pieces.... Annie Montgomerie (www.anniemontgomerie.co.uk) ... take a peek My local gallery has asked for more photographs of my mixed media work which is good.... however I don't have much currently other than all my studies so once the studio is clear and tidy I will start making. I really enjoyed sewing again last night. My last project you may remember was sculptural, taking me away from my lovely textiles and sewing which I do love doing so watch this space as to what's next..... So on 27th May I officially completed my fine art degree. Since that date, I've been looking at all the resources i have gathered on professional practice i.e. what am I going to do next, what do I really want to do, how will I bring in money to live, where will I put all my art work from the degree show !! and lots more questions.... as well as normal day to day living! On Monday I'm going to an exhibition at Banks Mill (Jo Beattie) and this will give me the opportunity to check out the studios as well and enquire about prices. I am also looking out for a group to join or maybe consider starting a group??? who knows .... not me for sure but that's ok. The right thing will happen at the right time.... i'm putting in the ground work at present. Have been melting recycled plastics today in the oven with a view to creating a few wind chimes... something I have done previously but this time will be replacing the cassette tape with string ..... more info soon Have also been out with the phone camera taking getting shots of Bruno in River Dove in Tutbury and also George down at the River Dove in Rocester - for more photographs click button below Today is the final day of our graduate fine art exhibition at Britanna Mill and probably during the weekend I will go and remove the work - where I am going to store it though is another matter! They're not small pieces!
I would like to exhibit them as part of a larger exhibition ..... details to follow in due course So, the opening of the exhibition happened last Friday evening. I thought I was the only nervous one, but I wasn't .... my fellow artists were too... what's going to happen... what do we do... Here are a few of my photographs and 2 from Caroline Locke (tutor and artist) from the evening.... It's Tuesday at 7.45 pm and today my exhibition space is complete and ready to be viewed on Friday. It's taken 3 and a 1/2 weeks to get it to this stage involving hard work, cleaning, painting walls and floors, filling holes, putting dresser hooks into walls, taking dresser hooks out and re filling holes, repainting over filled holes..... you get the idea.... Putting the work into the space has been an education in itself. I've learnt to think a bit more out of the box ; my thinking and plan was to place the pieces on the walls like pictures. However, working with tutors and technicians, I was asked what it would look like lower down on the wall - at child height? It hadn't crossed my mind to do this, and what a difference it made. Here are some photographs of the setup ...right through to the final display Can't believe in two weeks the exhibition will open and i will no longer be a student anymore.... exhibition space is coming along well. Walls are whiter than white ... work is starting to go up onto the walls... the floor is yet to be painted and i'm not looking forward to that as i'm a messy worker and with the work being up....! Sheets at the ready me thinks.... here are some pictures of my space and a few of the progress so far .. I've been going round snapping all the spaces and fellow students, technicians or anyone else that moves ! work has started on preparing the studios for our exhibition. The studios have been cleared of all furniture and work, boards are being put up for specific builds of exhibition spaces, and most walls are being painted white ...
my own space has been cleaned and prepared, and now had 3 coats of white emulsion on as well as some gum strip which covers where boards are joined together after the floors are painted next monday/tuesday, I can start to install the work... Have been working on my CV, sorting out a business card/postcard ready for the exhibition opening, updating journals and generally thinking OMG how much work have I got left to do !!
Did take time out at the weekend though to spend time with family in Birmingham which was lovely and felt refreshed I also had a a accident with my memory stick in that a PC i was using crashed last week and some of my work has been wiped.... either that or I'm imaging i've done things that I haven't actually done.... So, I have entered the last stages of my degree at Derby. The exhibition is on 27th May. The studio has to be cleared in two weeks time by which time, all my exhibition work should be finished and ready to be put in the my studio space. Before being put up though, the studio space has to be cleaned, painted white, and the floor painted (cleaning and painting of walls by me and a first year student helper).
Today I have created what is hopefully the last 3 of my 'baby monsters'; they are part of the 5 to be joined together to form a hanging piece. I have left them expanding in the studio..... they will be ready by tomorrow to start handling. Things that need to be finalised after the practical work is complete...... the portfolio, postcards, business cards, |
